When famed photographer André de Dienes first met an unknown 19-year-old named Norma Jeane Baker for a modelling gig, he was starstruck. “It was as if a miracle had happened to me. Norma Jeane seemed to be like an angel. I could hardly believe it for a few moments. An earthly, sexy-looking angel,†explains de Dienes.

In 1945, the two drove to Malibu beach for a shoot. The woman who would one day become the definition of a sex symbol, Marilyn Monroe, modeled without make-up nor did she wear a designer dress. And yet, her beauty shone through these black and white photos like the true star she eventually became.

Marilyn Monroe first met de Dienes when she modeled for him for his artistic nude project.

“One day when we were relaxing on the beach between photo sessions, I decided to capture some new expressions I had glimpsed on Marilyn’s face,” says de Dienes.

“I asked her to react instinctively, without giving herself time to think, to the words happiness, surprise, reflection, doubt, peace of mind, sadness, self-torment… and death,” explains the photographer.
