Homeless dogs in Costa Rica now have a safe haven; a place where they will have food to eat and be cared for. Territorio de Zaguates or Land of Stray Dogs is the home to 900 canines who run, play, and are loved in the ranch.

The non-profit shelter has a no-kill policy. Their goal is to give the animals plenty of love and exercise until they are adopted by their forever families. Lya Battle and Alvaro Saumet opened the shelter eight years ago to tackle the problem of abandoned dogs in the Central American country.

Mixed dogs are often seen as inferior animals in this country. To combat this thinking, the shelter has come up with creative names like The Alaskan Collie Fluffyterrier.

The shelters slogan states, “when you adopt a mutt, you adopt a unique breed.â€

Visitors are welcomed to join the herd of dogs for their daily hikes.
